Snow Day Entertainment

While eating fresh snow in large quantities is not recommended, according to Kitchn, snow in moderation is safe enough to try this tasty snow day recipe.  This simple recipe is fun for preschoolers to mix up with ingredients you likely have on hand.

Create a sweet indoor "snow" fort using marshmallows and toothpicks.  This is an excellent opportunity for fine motor practice and developing problem solving skills.

This week's beautiful snow provides a wonderful opportunity for outdoor play.  However, if it is time to come in and your child is still enjoying the snow play, fill your sink or a large plastic tote with snow  for sensory play or snow hide and seek with their favorite small toys.  Perhaps consider adding some measuring spoons and cups for your child to experiment with the science of capacity.

Build indoor snowmen using snow dough, like this recipe from Imagination Tree.  Or try our favorite recipe, for more packable "snow," includes hair conditioner and cornstarch.

  • Place the cornstarch in a large bowl.
  • Mix in the hair conditioner with your hands–it will just start coming together and it will be pliable and very, very smooth. If desired, add a little silver glitter for shiny snow!
  • (You may need to add more conditioner as you go)

Cozy up on the couch and read a collection of Snow Day books.  There are many great collections of snow themed books for preschool students.  Here is one to get you started.

Include your child in setting a special snowy table for today's lunch or dinner.   Work together to cut paper snowflakes or think creatively about other ways to decorate a Snow Day themed place setting. The video linked here demonstrates some easy snowflake cutting instructions for beginners.

We would love for your family to share some of your ideas for snow day fun in the comments below!
